Your privacy at QUT
Your privacy is important to us. At QUT, we collect, use, and manage your personal information in accordance with our Information Privacy policy and under the general authority of the Queensland University of Technology Act 1998.
What personal information do we collect?
As a QUT former student/graduate, partner, or donor we collect information directly from you. It may include your address, contact details, and academic or philanthropic interests. With your authorisation, we may collect information about you from other publicly available sources, including social media accounts. In addition, we may also collect information about you when you access the QUT Alumni and Friends website through social media accounts like Facebook, LinkedIn or Google.
Why do we collect your personal information?
We would like to stay connected with you to tell you about QUT activities that we think will be of interest to you.
As QUT alumni, you can manage your communications preferences, if you do not wish to receive some, or all, of these communications. For other non-alumni and donors to QUT, please contact ast.enquiries@qut.edu.au to manage your communications preferences.
What do we do with your information?
We only use the information we collect to improve and personalise our services to you as QUT alumni, partners or doners. Your personal information is used in the following ways:
- to maintain contact and keep you up to date with QUT activities that we think will be of interest to you;
- to acknowledge you in QUT media and publications as a donor (unless you have indicated otherwise); and
- to create profiles to inform you about QUT activities that are relevant to you and to assist our fundraising that may involve the automated processing of your personal data. We always assess the privacy risks before undertaking this activity. You can request that your information is not used in this way by contacting ast.enquiries@qut.edu.au
- We do not use your social media information to contact you unless you expressly consent to use social media contact details for communication with QUT.
Our disclosure practices
QUT does not disclose your information to any external parties, except in extremely rare circumstances where disclosure is required or authorised by law, or where it is necessary to prevent or lessen a serious and imminent threat to a person's life or health. In such cases, your information may be disclosed without your consent or prior notification.
Transfer your information outside Australia
QUT is located in Queensland Australia. We process your personal information in Australia. We may transfer your information to a country or international organisation outside of Australia or the European Union. Any transfer outside Australia will be subject to a legally binding agreement that upholds principles for the fair handling of personal information or otherwise be comply with the Information Privacy Act 2009 (Qld).
Protecting your privacy
Your personal information is protected according to our QUT Information Privacy policy.
QUT retains your information for as long as you want us to stay connected with you or for a period required under the Public Records Act 2023 (Qld), or other applicable law.

QUT provides you with ways to ensure that the university is managing your personal information according to the Information Privacy Act 2009 (Qld) and other relevant privacy laws. This includes your right to access your personal information and to seek correction of it if you believe it is inaccurate.
It is important that the information we hold about you is accurate, and we ask that you keep it up to date during your relationship with us.
If you believe that QUT has not managed your personal information appropriately you may make a complaint to QUT's Privacy Officer.
