Dr Mehran Janmohammadi
Faculty of Engineering,
School of Civil & Environmental Engineering
Biography
Mehran is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in environmental and water engineering at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). His research focuses on developing practical, data-driven solutions for water quality monitoring and real-time control of stormwater management systems.
He holds a Master of Environmental Engineering from the University of Tehran, where he worked on water and wastewater treatment using adsorbent materials. He completed his PhD at Monash University under the supervision of Professor David McCarthy and Dr Luke Shi, where his research centred on low-cost, open-source sensing systems and machine learning-based soft sensors for water quality monitoring, with a particular focus on nitrate and ammonia. His work addressed key industry challenges such as limited monitoring data, sensor drift, and transferability of models across sites.
In 2025, Mehran joined QUT as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, working with Dr Luke Shi on real-time control (RTC) of stormwater assets, including constructed wetlands. His current research integrates sensor data with hydrodynamic and water quality models to support adaptive control strategies that improve nutrient removal, hydraulic performance, and operational resilience. He is currently involved in the modelling and RTC development of the Troups Creek wetland.
Mehran’s research is strongly aligned with industry needs and funding priorities in urban water management, digital water infrastructure, and climate-resilient stormwater systems. He actively works at the interface of sensing, modelling, and control to support scalable, cost-effective solutions for real-world water management challenges.
