Biography
Bimali Koongolla is a PhD candidate at QUT, attached to the School of Chemistry and Physics. Bimali investigates PFAS contamination in water systems, focusing on the development of innovative remediation methods using light-activated materials. Her work combines environmental sampling with analytical techniques to understand how PFAS interacts with water and sediment. By integrating laboratory-based experiments and material science approaches, she aims to design sustainable methods to reduce PFAS concentrations in affected water bodies. Her research contributes to practical solutions for water quality management and environmental protection, addressing an emerging global contaminant of concern.
Bimali has extensive experience in environmental research and consultancy. She worked as a national consultant research associate with the United Nations Development Programme and as a research scientist with Helix Science. She has led environmental monitoring and data analysis projects in marine and freshwater systems, developed laboratory methods for microplastics pollution. She holds a B.Sc. in Marine Sciences from the University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka, and an M.Sc. in Environmental Science from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, China.
