Background
Dr Buddhika is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), affiliated with the Centre for Biomedical Technologies (CBT). He specialises in surface engineering using advanced manufacturing technologies for biomedical implants and medical devices, with a particular focus on developing functional nanostructured surfaces with antibacterial and antiviral properties to reduce device-associated infections. He completed his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at QUT in 2026, following a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, in 2017.
Dr Buddhika has extensive experience across academia and industry, combining multidisciplinary research, engineering design, manufacturing, and technology development. He previously worked for nearly 4 years as a Lead R&D Engineer at the Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology (SLINTEC), where he led the development of a US$1.3 million graphene manufacturing facility. His industrial experience also includes multidisciplinary R&D projects involving industrial dust collection systems, airborne solvent recovery systems, patented water filtration technology, thorium extraction from monazite, and pilot-scale plant design and commissioning. In addition, he served as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka for 2.5 years and undertook engineering consultancy roles supporting the scale-up and commercialisation of laboratory-scale research for government-funded and private-sector projects.
His teaching experience at QUT includes serving as a sessional academic in Materials and Manufacturing (EGB214), Advanced Manufacturing, and Mechanical Systems Design (EGH420). His teaching and research interests span mechanical engineering, advanced manufacturing, materials engineering, and biomedical technologies.
His current research focuses on translating advanced surface engineering technologies into practical biomedical implant and medical device applications, particularly through the development of multifunctional nanostructured surfaces for infection prevention. He is also exploring the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning into biomaterial surface design and optimisation, aiming to advance the development of next-generation functional biomaterials and medical technologies.
