QUT researchers will present a rapid-fire overview of a wide range of environmentally focussed research projects in a Conversations at the Cube series of talks to mark the university’s inaugural Sustainability Week 23 – 27 August.
In a program of talks and poster presentations from 10am Monday to Thursday, QUT Sustainability Manager Leigh Burgess said a range of researchers from across the university will be delivering a summary of projects that offer real-world insights into tackling problems and building sustainability solutions for the future.
“QUT researchers are approaching this important area in a variety of ways, that goes from using bacteria to recycle plastic waste, to the future of customised shopping and the potential of using blockchain to track textile recycling,” Ms Burgess said.
The talks and displays at The Cube will be themed throughout the week.
- Monday: Researchers from Creative Industries, Science, Engineering, Business and Law, the Centre for a Waste Free World and the Australian Centre for Entrepreneurship Research share insights into waste management and the circular economy, capturing and storing carbon dioxide and securing Antarctica’s future.
- Tuesday: Students and researchers will provide a snapshot of interaction design for sustainability.
- Wednesday: School of Biology and Environmental Science share research that addresses global challenges, ranging from food security to climate change-related environmental concerns.
- Thursday: The Centre for Agriculture and the Bioeconomy will provide a glimpse of the work that they are doing to enable farmers to grow more food with fewer resources, to develop crops that are more nutritious and resistant to drought and pests, and how they are discovering innovative ways to make renewable fuels, chemicals, and other products from agricultural wastes.
Pro Vice-Chancellor (Sustainability Strategy) Professor Kerrie Wilson said the week offered both students and staff the opportunity to better understand how they as individuals, and the university, could become more sustainable.
“Sustainability Week enables us to hear from experts from both outside and within the university to guide us towards a future that’s about living in harmony with our planet.”
