Short courses and professional development

Hands-on experience

During this course, you'll develop your writing skills, find your place in the writing industry, and gain a perspective on writing as both a vocation and creative practice.

You'll get industry exposure through our sponsorship of the Queensland Writers Centre and Brisbane Writers Festival, internships at literary events and publishing houses, and through opportunities to perform at public readings and festivals.

We encourage our creative students to submit their work to journals and competitions, including the QUT Creative Writing prize, in which you could win $2,000 or the opportunity to be published in our Creative Writing Anthology.

Build real-world skills

You'll graduate with advanced writing and communication competence - a rare skill that's highly sought after by employers.

You'll be encouraged to experiment with a variety of forms and genres, including novels, short stories, creative non-fiction, youth writing, media writing and poetry. We'll also help you build specialist writing skills for professional work, such as corporate writing, persuasive writing, editing and script writing.

You can do elective study in feature writing and interactive web writing, and undertake a project to write a sustained work in a genre of your choice.
