Study psychology and counselling

We offer programs that are embedded with real experiences, applied research, and comprehensive interpersonal skills.

Why study psychology and counselling at QUT?

  • Undergraduate students complete units in specialised areas of psychology and in other areas of interest from across the university.
  • Postgraduate students gain experience and clinical training in our on-campus Psychology and Counselling Clinic.
  • Join a community with a culture built upon inclusion, diversity and collaboration.
  • Our psychology courses are accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council and provide a pathway to becoming a registered psychologist or to complete masters or doctoral level studies.

Courses with contemporary curriculum

We offer programs that provide pathways for a dynamic career – from undergraduate behavioural science through to PhDs.

Our flexible Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Psychology) lets you focus on specialised areas in psychology and in other areas of interest across the university. You may also pair this degree with one in business, laws, justice, social work, or nursing.

We are the only university in Queensland to offer a Master of Psychology (Educational and Developmental), developing expert knowledge in applied psychological principles across the lifespan.

We offer a combined Master of Clinical Psychology and PhD program, in which the research project is linked across the two programs to create a powerful synergy.

The Master of Counselling encourages students to take an applied, experiential focus to their study with an emphasis on solution-focused and narrative therapies, family therapy, group work and supervision.

Work with real clients

Students in the undergraduate degree may complete a placement at one of our partner organisations and explore career pathways in clinical psychology, cognitive neuroscience, social psychology and child protection, disability services, or human resources.

In the postgraduate programs you will work with clients at the state-of-the-art Psychology and Counselling Clinic. Under the supervision of experienced psychologists, you may offer one-on-one and group therapy sessions in psychology, counselling, family therapy, and assessment services.

All of our students have the opportunity to have an international experience. Recently, our students have travelled to Romania, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, China and Bangladesh.

Research with impact

We’re committed to research outcomes that can be translated into practice for immediate effect.

A significant area of focus is improving the health and wellbeing of vulnerable groups including farmers, refugees, persons with disabilities, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Our areas of research strength include:

  • Health psychology: health management, attachment, trauma, resilience, occupational health and road safety
  • cognition and cognitive neuroscience: perception, memory, executive functioning, and bilingualism
  • clinical psychology: counselling, mental illness, therapy and addiction
  • developmental and educational psychology: child development and adult education
  • social and community psychology: culture, decision-making, and sustainability.

Our researchers work in leading research facilities including the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI). We are also connected with facilities that are linked to major Brisbane hospitals.

Specialised road safety research

Our Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety - Queensland (CARRS-Q) is an Australian leader in road safety research, education and outreach activities. CARRS-Q has had a major impact on road safety and injury prevention policies and practices, through both government and industry linkages.
