Examine the most effective ways of using social media tools for your organisation or business.

This introductory course offers an overview of different social media platforms and how they are used to promote issues and agendas. We go through the dos and don’ts of using social media for professional communication, and give you practical skills on how to build an online presence and manage your social media accounts.

Who should participate

This course is for individuals or teams interested in understanding social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn - and more - for their business or individual practice. You will learn how to build your online presence, tools to help you manage your social media platforms, how to make use of opportunities and pitfalls to avoid.

Basic experience using standard social media platforms is welcomed, but not required to participate. The course is open for anyone over the age of 18, including international participants.

As part of the course it is expected that you will create profiles on some of the major social media platforms we will be working with, if you have not already done so.

2017 Fees

  • Early-bird discounted fee: $371.25 (GST included)

Late registration fees

$50 (GST included).

Online registrations will be open for 1 week after the closing date, unless the course is full.

We won't accept registrations once the course has started.

Learn how to use social media for professional communication. We focus on the strengths and weaknesses of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, as well as a range of other social media platforms, relevant to your business or organisation. We talk about how you can use social media to build your presence online and how to manage your social media accounts.

Drawing on examples of best practice and notable failures, we highlight how social media is used in a range of professional contexts. We identify the benefits and the pitfalls.

Working with instructors and the rest of your group, you will test your own social media strategies to examine their effectiveness and explore new opportunities for your organisation or business.

Email Continuing Professional Education to register your interest for future courses and we'll contact you when dates are confirmed and registrations open.


When you register for the course, you will create an account with us. You'll need to pay your fees online by credit or debit card.

You will be able to access your account, including your invoice, using your email address and password.

FEE-HELP and HECS-HELP are not available for Continuing Professional Education courses.

Early-bird discount

We offer a 10% early-bird discount if you register up to 4 weeks before the course starts.

QUT staff

If you are a QUT staff member and QUT will pay your fees, you may choose the QUT Staff payment option and enter the relevant account code and authorising officer details.


Registrations close 10 working days before the start of the course.

If the course is full, please email Continuing Professional Education to register your interest. We will advise you by email if a position becomes available.


To cancel your registration, you must apply in writing to the course manager at Continuing Professional Education. If you cancel 10 business days before the course starts, we will fully refund your fee, less the non-refundable $100 registration fee.

No registration refunds will be made within 10 business days of the course starting.

QUT Creative Industries reserves the right to cancel a course due to unforeseen circumstances or should insufficient registrations be received to run a short course. In this event, we will advise you as soon as possible, and provide a full refund or register you for another course of equivalent value. QUT are not responsible for any expenses you may have incurred if the course is cancelled.
