We witness rapid climate change caused by human activities and aim to understand the complex feedback of various processes that contribute to climate dynamics. But have Earth experienced other periods of climate change and what caused these variations?
The answer lies in the sedimentary archives stored at the bottom of the sea. The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) has access to these archives through targeted expeditions that recover samples of rocks formed during times of change.
One of the most recent IODP expeditions went to offshore Africa to examine the submarine Agulhas Plateau that witnessed the long-term changes in paleo-climate and ocean circulation as the Earth evolved from warm, greenhouse conditions in the Cretaceous, to a cooler world with polar ice sheets in the Cenozoic.
The Australian participant in this expedition, Dr Derya Gurer (QUT Visiting Fellow), will talk about the Agulhas Plateau rocks and environment that will allow the scientists to investigate the interplay between changes in tectonic configuration, global climate, ocean depth and circulation.
