Grant writing is a skill nonprofit organisations and social enterprises need if they wish to gain government or philanthropic support for their project or venture. With billions of dollars given away each year by grant makers, it is essential people wishing to apply for grants are savvy and skilled, especially since philanthropic funding is considered the toughest to apply for. While there is no one magic formula to use when writing grants, there are many best practices that can increase your chances for success.

Dr Ruth Knight is from QUT’s Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies. Ruth has extensive experience in nonprofit leadership roles and grant writing for a variety of organisations over 20 years. Ruth is on a mission to advance quality research and practice in the sector to enable organisations achieve greater social impact.
Associate Professor Wendy Scaife is Director of QUT’s Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies. Wendy serves on philanthropic grants committees, and international research boards and holds two Vice-Chancellor's excellence awards. She chairs a small community heritage organisation and was previously CEO of a health nonprofit that ran successful major gift campaigns.
Dr Lyn Alderman from The Evaluators Collective has over thirty-five years' experience in the sector so understands what makes a persuasive grant proposal. As the former Chief Evaluator for the Commonwealth Department of Social Services, Lyn developed extensive experience as the commissioner of 25 external evaluations and chair of the assessment panels.
Alicia Edwards is a Grants Strategist at Strategic Grants. Her first fundraising role was at the Surf Life Saving Foundation where she managed significant fundraising appeals and community fundraising initiatives. She has since worked with a range of outstanding medical research teams to develop their relationships with funders, community organisations and major donors. She now has extensive experience supporting grant seekers ensure that they apply a strategic approach to their grant-seeking activity.
