Getting prepared

Your study adventure is about to begin now that your visa and application to study at QUT have been approved - not long now and you'll be in Australia! But before you start preparing to travel to Brisbane, here are some important things you need to do, and know about.

Planning your arrival

Pre-departure briefings

Once you've accepted your offer to study with us, you can connect with our international student mentors in-person in some countries, or online, to be guided through the main stages of moving to Australia. You can also find more information in the New to Brisbane Guide.

Before you leave home

There are a number of important documents you'll need to begin your study adventure in Australia. Make sure you bring these documents with you and that you leave photocopies of them with your family in case you lose the originals: passport; student visa; certified copies of your birth certificate and educational qualifications; confirmation of your enrolment; medical records or prescriptions; health or travel insurance; and driver's licence.

Accommodation options

There are a number of accommodation options to choose from based on your length of study and personal preference, that are located within a short walking distance from both our inner-city campuses. Learn more

Overseas Student Health Cover

As an international student in Australia you must have organised your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) before you leave your home country, unless you're from Belgium or Norway. If you don't or fail to keep your health cover current whilst in
Australia, the Department of Home Affairs can cancel your visa.

Arriving in Brisbane

It's best to arrive a few weeks before semester starts so you have time to find suitable accommodation, adjust to life in Brisbane and attend Orientation Week, all before semester starts. We can't wait to welcome you to Australia! You can find a lot of useful information in our QUT Arrival Guide (PDF 905.45KB). Here's what you need to know and do before you book your flight. Bringing your family

If you'd like to bring your family to Australia with you, we recommend you discuss your options with one of our international student advisers as it can take 2-4 months on average for your application to be processed. Find out more

Usually one week before Semester starts, we provide a fun and informative carnival of sorts, which takes over both our campuses. It's Orientation Week, and it'll help you get comfortable and settled before classes commence. There are a couple of compulsory sessions for international students so please add those to your diary and take note of the start date on your offer letter, as that includes orientation attendance dates. Arriving late for semester

If you're not going to be able to commence by the start date on your offer letter, you'll need to apply for and be granted in writing,
an agreed new start date by QUT. Please contact QUT International Admissions to request a late start date.

Support services available

Keep in mind that our International Student Services (ISS) team organises short trips and weekend activities for international students, so you'll get to see Australia and make more friends at the same time.To see what upcoming trips are planned, visit the ISS News site and ISS Facebook page. You'll hear from ISS once you've accepted your offer and they're available to assist you once you've arrived; ISS are conveniently located on both Kelvin Grove and Gardens Point campuses.
