The Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) will allow you to obtain a teaching qualification if you have a bachelor degree in a field other than education.

Professional recognition

This course meets professional teaching standards for the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership and Queensland College of Teachers. Graduates are also recognised as qualified early childhood teachers under the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority framework.

Graduates are eligible to apply for teacher registration.

Course requirements

There are requirements that you will need to meet as a student in this course. You will need to identify these requirements and ensure you allow sufficient time to meet them.

Blue card: because you will be working with children or young people in this course, you will need to apply for a blue card for professional placements located in Queensland (or the interstate equivalent for other states and territories).

Literacy and numeracy: you will need to successfully complete the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students to graduate from this course.

Entry requirements

Academic entry requirements

A completed recognised three year bachelor degree (or higher award) not in education or in a course leading to teacher registration, with a minimum grade point average score of 4 (on QUT's  7 point scale); and

At least one year full-time study relevant to one or more learning areas in the primary school curriculum. Primary school curriculum areas are English, mathematics, science, humanities and social sciences, the arts (music, drama, dance, media arts and visual arts), languages, health and physical education and technologies.

Additional entry requirements

Pass the Initial Teacher Education Course (ITE) capabilities criteria.

You must submit your personal statement  addressing suitability criteria. Applicants are to address two categories describing their work and life experiences that demonstrate the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) competencies and their understanding of and motivations about the course they are applying for.

Working with Children: blue card

You'll need to apply for a blue card because you'll be working with children or young people as part of this course. There's no cost if you apply through QUT.

Students wishing to accept their offer must submit their blue card application forms:

  • no later than 24 December for Semester 1 entry

Please submit your blue card application form immediately after receiving your offer. You won't be able to accept your offer and enrol if you don't submit your correctly completed blue card application form on time.
