Associate Professor Severine Navarro
Children’s Hospital Foundation Fellow
As Team Head of Mucosal Immunology at QIMR Berghofer, Severine leads research into immune regulation to control inappropriate immune responses that are responsible for allergy and autoimmune diseases. The focus of her research is the development of hookworm protein-based therapeutics for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases such as allergy, asthma, inflammatory bowel diseases and mood disorders. She has done her postdoctoral training at the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine at James Cook University in Cairns, where she identified and characterised hookworm-derived immunomodulatory compounds showing efficacy in experimental asthma and colitis, and presenting high translational potential.
Dr Rebecca Byrne
Lead Researcher
Rebecca is an Accredited Practising Dietitian and Lecturer within QUT’s School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences. Her research focuses on what and how young children are fed, particularly the influence of feeding practices used by educators in the Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) setting, and understanding the development of eating behaviours, such as fussy eating. Rebecca leads new developments within the nutrition and dietetics field. Her early research examined the dietary intake of toddlers within NOURISH – one of the first trials internationally to evaluate the impact of maternal responsive feeding practices on infant intake, eating behaviour and growth. She is a founding member of the National Nutrition Network: ECEC, and a leader of the special interest group in ECEC within the International Society of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity. Rebecca is also a member of the Federal Government’s expert working group for the revision of Australia’s National Breastfeeding Strategy.
