Children’s health and physical activity
Professor Stewart Trost and Dr Rebecca Byrne, working out of the Centre for Children's Health Research (CCHR), are testing the effectiveness of a lifestyle intervention to improve health and developmental outcomes for Australian children and families attending community playgroups. The Healthy Conversations @ Playgroup program, which is being trialed at 60 playgroups in Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia, will target four key lifestyle behaviours (poor diet, physical inactivity, excessive screen time, and short sleep duration) associated with obesity risk and other chronic health conditions such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Environmental physiology of armed services
Professor Ian Stewart and Associate Professor Geoffrey Minett work with the Australian armed services on environmental physiology research, to help protect against symptoms of heat exhaustion including fatigue, orthostatic intolerance, and loss of concentration. The Exercise and Environmental Ergonomics (E3) lab is evaluating the effectiveness of commercial cooling systems in personal protective equipment (PPE), and has also provided scientific and research support to the Australian Army in selecting the most appropriate vehicles for acquisition, based on whether the environmental conditions within them prevented deterioration in health and performance of those operating or being transported in them.
