What you'll receive
You'll receive $15,000, paid in two equal instalments over one year.
We will also help you to:
- make contact with rural networks to take part in activities that maintain or develop ties to rural Australia
- connect with a rural nurse mentor, where appropriate.
Eligibility
You must be:
- a female Australian citizen or permanent resident
- enrolled or have submitted an application prior to the scholarship application closing date for postgraduate study in NS80 Master of Advanced Practice Nursing or NS88 or NS90 Master of Nurse Practitioner
- committed to working in rural and remote areas of Australia currently or in the future.
Previous scholarship recipients may re-apply.
How to apply
Applications for the 2024 Ron Macnamara Rural Nursing Scholarship have now closed. Applications will reopen in mid-2024 for the 2025 Scholarship program.
You must complete the application form and include a written submission which includes:
- A statement (up to one A4 page) indicating how you are committed to working in remote areas of Australia currently or in the future.
- A statement (up to one A4 page) providing information on your financial situation and how the scholarship would benefit you.
Also attach the following documents:
- your current curriculum vitae (CV)
- a certified copy of your academic record if your studies were not at QUT.

What happens next?
Applications will be assessed on:
- academic merit
- your commitment to working in rural and remote areas of Australia currently or in the future
- financial need.
Preference will be given to candidates from rural or regional Australia who would not be able to study without financial assistance.
Applications submitted for the November 2023 closing date are eligible to receive the scholarship in the 2024 academic year.
We expect to interview shortlisted applicants in early February 2024.
Conditions
You must remain enrolled in one of the eligible courses to keep your scholarship.

About the scholarship
The Ron Macnamara Rural Nursing Scholarship aims to foster the further education of female advanced practice nurses and nurse practitioners, with a view to making a difference to the future of rural and remote Australia.
Ms Laurie Cowled honours her late husband, Ron Macnamara, who passed away in February 2005, by offering The Ron Macnamara Rural Nursing Scholarship.
