'My research focuses on improving indoor air quality and making a liveable environment inside medium and high-rise apartments using natural ventilation. I looked at how changing the design and size of balconies impact air circulation and the temperature indoors.
Research at QUT's School of Built Environment focuses on real-world problems and working with industry, which is fantastic. As a mechanical and energy engineer, I have the opportunity to work with experts from other disciplines on innovative solutions.'
'My research is looking at ways to improve early construction cost estimates using artificial intelligence. I'm investigating ways to optimise data collection and sanitisation to develop more accurate prediction models.
QUT has a global reputation as one of the best universities for researching technology, engineering and innovation. Most importantly, QUT offers exciting opportunities to cooperate with industry, which helps us make connections, build practical knowledge and find opportunities for our future careers.’
A sustainable future
'My research explores and advocates for better-integrated food planning in urban and regional planning. Right now, the focus rests on land use, house, transportation and environment, but food sustainability is underserved in academia and practice.
I studied my honours degree at QUT, and the learning journey was fantastic. I had wonderful lecturers and an amazing teaching crew, so continuing my research with a PhD was a natural next step. The School of Built Environment combines rich knowledge and real-world experience to support research students like me as we create a better world.'
A place for high-quality research
'Through my PhD research, I'm developing a methodological approach for demarcating peri-urban areas. I use geographic information system and remote sensing tools, and conduct extensive data analyses to support effective urban growth management.
The School of Built Environment has state-of-the-art technology and provides an exceptionally pleasing environment in which to perform high-quality research. The Smart City Research Group and the Urban Studies Lab host world-renowned scholars, distinguishing the school as a global leader in urban and regional planning research.'
'My PhD research focuses on developing a methodological approach to identify disaster severity using location-specific social media data. I also used the methodology to identify trending smart city concepts and themes, and to identify how community perceptions impact decision making during COVID-19.
The School of Built Environment has prepared me to be a researcher for future cities, and to produce innovative work in exciting spaces. The school has supported me throughout my PhD, and in 2020 my hard work was recognised with a QUT Science and Engineering Faculty High Achiever Award.'
A supportive environment
'My research investigates innovative and practical ways to measure the impacts of hot and humid weather environments on work environments. I've designed and developed a novel system to approximate activity intensity levels and associated risks, based on computer vision analysis, real-time video recordings and weather measurements.
I chose QUT because of its global reputation as a leader in technology and innovation. I really enjoy the supportive research environment that the School of Built Environment fosters.'
