When high school teacher Sheridan Carey began a Master of Education at QUT, she was expecting a bumpy ride – but graduated in July with the opposite experience.
It had been 14 years since Sheridan finished her Bachelor of Education at QUT, so returning to study was daunting.
“I was terrified of navigating new technology and online learning systems but my fears were unfounded. It only took the first subject to find my feet and then it was all systems go,” said Sheridan.
“I found the work challenging but not impossible, relevant to my field and connected to the real world of education.
“For example, in one unit we were required to write a literature review on a topic of interest. I chose to focus on the effectiveness of school-based programs in promoting positive mental health in adolescent boys.
“This was a challenging issue I had faced in my teaching career, so the opportunity to learn more and the potential to apply my learnings in the real world was invaluable,” said Sheridan.
Sheridan, who completed a Master of Education in Leadership and Management, said support from lecturers gave her the confidence to publish her literature review.
“I was encouraged to publish my literature review in a journal, but I couldn’t find anyone to co-author it with me,” said Sheridan.
“One of the lecturers urged me to do it on my own and my review was recently published. I am so glad I took her advice, persisted with the process and backed myself!
“Knowing that colleagues and other educators may read the article and gain knowledge or insight is extremely satisfying as my ultimate goal was to help students.”
Sheridan said she now feels equipped with the confidence and skills to take on a leadership role.
“My desire to take on leadership roles in schools has only grown while completing my Masters. I am excited about what the future may hold.”
And Sheridan’s advice for other teachers considering a postgraduate degree? Go for it and back yourself!
“Studying at university is an opportunity to expand your knowledge, open your mind and meet like-minded people. I am very grateful that QUT allowed me to do this.”
