Receiving the John Stainton International Bursary allowed animation graduate Jordan Turner travel to Europe to attend the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and participate in a specialised Animation Study Tour.

During my final year of study, I was the recipient of the John Stainton International Bursary for film and television.

Being awarded this bursary allowed me to travel to France as part of my studies, where I attended the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, one of the largest animation festivals in the world.

Participating in the Animation Study Tour was an eye-opening experience, which exposed me to the beauty and culture of the French Animation Film Industry.

At Annecy I was able to observe the MIFA TV & Specials industry project pitches and listen to a wide variety of panels and workshops, gaining new understandings of animation techniques and insights into virtual reality as a storytelling medium.

I also attended a four-day animation workshop at Gobelins, L’École de L’Image, where I spoke with Marie Celaya, the facial capture animation supervisor for Quantic Dream’s Detroit: Become Human (2018).

Marie was generous enough to review my motion capture showreel and answer my many questions regarding facial and performance capture. This was an exciting and valuable experience which has expanded my understanding of my creative field and the skills I need to thrive within it.

This extraordinary opportunity has connected me with industry professionals and opened new and exciting pathways for my career as a creative practitioner, including work with industry performance capture stuntman Marco Sinigaglia and employment opportunities overseas as a motion capture technician.

I am extremely grateful to Mr Stainton and QUT for providing me with the financial support I needed to undertake this amazing experience through the John Stainton International Bursary.
