The new High School Physics – Electromagnetism Unleashed Classroom Kits are a partnership between QUT and Street Science and are now available for schools across Australia to purchase.
The classroom kit includes physics electromagnetism practicals and accompanying digital lessons, curriculum aligned to the Science Year 9 and Year 10 syllabus.
The practicals and lessons were designed and developed by QUT alumnus and Street Science founder Steve Liddell and QUT physics graduates, Ollie Pye and Jacob Hautaniemi.
When you purchase a Classroom Kit you will receive instant access to a series of accompanying digital lessons. Digital Lessons are accessed via the Street Science Digital Portal. The digital lesson videos feature Steve, Ollie and physics UG student Angelique Zantiotis.
Students explore the scientific concept of Energy Transformations through a series of electromagnetism investigations. Electromagnetism is the interaction between electricity and magnetism, and is one approach to generating electricity. The experiments include:
- Electromagnetism and the hand crank
- Build an Electromagnetic train
- Create a Spinning Copper Heart
“We are really excited to finally be able to bring a high school classroom kit to the market,” said Street Science founder Steve Liddell.
“Co-designing the physics-based kits with QUT, we are pleased to produce a product that provides hands-on, inquiry-based practical experiments, to assist teachers in developing students understanding of energy transfers and electromagnetism.”
This week, students from Cavendish Road State High School had an opportunity to test out the classroom kit on campus in our undergraduate Physics lab. QUT ambassadors Ollie and Fiona and Street Science Operations Manager Laura Andrews demonstrated the physics experiments using a variety of resources from the kit and then students had the chance to do their own experiments. The students had fun and were eager to learn new concepts of physics.
Each kit also includes a class set of the QUT Ready STEM Go brochure, and links to the ‘think STEM, think QUT’ video featuring students from engineering, science, maths, IT, health and education.
