Undergraduate applying: a step-by-step guide

You can apply for up to six courses at once. You need to list the courses on your QTAC application in order of preference.

You’ll need to meet certain dates for your application. Check our key dates to see what important dates are coming up.

You need to meet specific entry requirements to be considered for entry to each of our courses. Check the requirements tab in your course information for more details.

To be considered for entry you must be either at least 18-years old or completed year 12 and be at least 16-years old.

From 2022, you will need to have an ATAR (or equivalent) for entry or:

• be at least 19 years old at the first census date of QUT study; or
• be 18 years old with:

• a completed Certificate IV (or higher qualification); or
• at least 0.25 year of degree (or higher ) study; or
• at least 0.50 year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) work experience.

For most of our courses, entry is based on your ATAR or selection rank, which is calculated based on your qualifications and experience.  We first consider applicants with ATAR or selection rank of 99.95, then 99.90, and so on.

Some courses have other entry requirements, like auditions, interviews, portfolios or questionnaires. For these courses you usually need to apply to QUT as well as to QTAC, and the closing dates may be different. Make sure you check your course information for application requirements and closing dates.

We have revised our offer guarantee for 2021 entry to give you greater peace of mind about your study choices. With some design, health and education courses guaranteed at an ATAR or selection rank of 75.00, engineering at 82.00, business at 84.00 and law at 90.00, you can assess your eligibility for an offer as soon as you know your ATAR or selection rank. We have also updated offer guarantee thresholds for a wide range of double degrees. More competitive courses are guaranteed at an ATAR or selection rank of 87.00 or 93.00. Check if your course is included.

• recent secondary education
• higher education study
• vocational education and training (VET) study
• work and life experience.

Worried you won't get into the course you want?

If you're concerned that your ATAR or selection rank isn't high enough to get into the course you want, you should think about upgrading your selection rank through other study or applying for a QUT College diploma or a TAFE-Queensland dual award as an entry pathway.

Domestic applicants with overseas qualifications

We will consider equivalent overseas qualifications for admissions purposes. Please contact QTAC for more information about how overseas qualifications will be assessed for entry. If you have secondary or tertiary qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction, you must provide evidence of English language proficiency.

English language proficiency

We require students to demonstrate they can speak, write, read and comprehend academic English to a specified standard. If you have an Australian Year 12 qualification, you meet the English proficiency standards excluding nursing courses.

To get an idea of how much your course will cost, check the fees tab in your course information. Don't forget to also check the scholarships tab to see if you're eligible for a scholarship to help with costs.

Your actual fees will vary depending on which units you enrol in. You can check specific costs for units in the details and units tab in your course information.

Some courses have extra costs for things like field trips, equipment or practical training.

You may be eligible for:

• a HECS-HELP loan to help you pay your course fees
• Centrelink payments to help with living expenses
• scholarships to help with course fees and living expenses.

If you study at QUT, you'll also have access to services including financial counselling, employment advice and short-term loans.

You may be able to have your past studies or work experience count as advanced standing (credit) towards your QUT course.

That means you won't have to complete all of the units listed in your course structure and you may be able to graduate sooner.

You need to apply separately for advanced standing once you’ve accepted your offer, so make sure you check the application requirements and closing dates.

1. Use your first and second preferences for your dream courses - the ones you really want to study.
2. Use your third and fourth preferences for back-up courses that you are interested in studying, but are less competitive for entry
3. Use your fifth and sixth preferences for courses that you can study to get help you get into the course you really want.
