Science and Engineering a university for the real world

Real-world learning experiences

We prepare you to become a work-ready graduate through real-world learning experiences. These experiences integrate theory, skills and discipline-specific knowledge with professional and contemporary practice. Depending on the experience, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • network and form working relationships with organisations
  • see what it’s like to work on a day-to-day basis in your prospective career
  • experience an industry-specific project from start to finish
  • develop your research and academic skills
  • expand your business and personal skills to be more competitive when you graduate.

In the workplace

Our work integrated learning (WIL) program is a platform for connecting you with invaluable workplace experiences. It’s the perfect opportunity for putting the theory you learn in class into practice while you gain academic credit.

The Science and Engineering Faculty offers two main types of WIL experiences:

Work placements

As part of some undergraduate degrees you are required to complete between 30 and 60 days of work experience based within an organisation.

This usually takes place between second and fourth year of your degree, depending on your discipline.

Industry-based projects

Depending on your course, you can work on an industry-proposed project to produce a real-world outcome. Projects are completed:

  • on campus or in the workplace
  • usually in your final year
  • individually or in a group
  • with a QUT academic supervisor and an industry supervisor.
  • over one or two semesters for around 12 hours per week.
'For my 10-week research experience in QUT's VRES program, I worked with a senior researcher to develop the electronic control and communications systems for an autonomous surf life-saving robot that can be directed to people in distress'. Jarod Lam, Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)
