Real-world learning experiences

We prepare you to become a work-ready graduate through real-world learning experiences. These experiences integrate theory, skills and discipline-specific knowledge with professional and contemporary practice. Depending on the experience, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • network and form working relationships with organisations
  • see what it’s like to work on a day-to-day basis in your prospective career
  • experience an industry-specific project from start to finish
  • develop your research and academic skills
  • expand your business and personal skills to be more competitive when you graduate.

In the workplace

Our work integrated learning (WIL) program is a platform for connecting you with invaluable workplace experiences. It’s the perfect opportunity for putting the theory you learn in class into practice while you gain academic credit.

The Science and Engineering Faculty offers two main types of WIL experiences:

Work placements

As part of some undergraduate degrees you are required to complete between 30 and 60 days of work experience based within an organisation.

This usually takes place between second and fourth year of your degree, depending on your discipline.

Industry-based projects

Depending on your course, you can work on an industry-proposed project to produce a real-world outcome. Projects are completed:

  • on campus or in the workplace
  • usually in your final year
  • individually or in a group
  • with a QUT academic supervisor and an industry supervisor.
  • over one or two semesters for around 12 hours per week.

Vacation Research Experience Scheme

Our Vacation Research Experience Scheme (VRES) gives you the opportunity to research your passion in science, technology, engineering and mathematics for around 6-10 weeks over the summer. You can take part in the program from your second year. It’s a great opportunity to:

  • work in a challenging environment where you can investigate your potential for research work or a research degree
  • contribute to a research project
  • work with our world-class researchers.
