Engineering project: Data analytics identifies power outages
Final-year electrical engineering student Caitlin Nicholas spent a year with Energex, analysing data and using algorithms to identify power outage tweets. The project quantified the value of using publicly available data to identify and manage power outages by developing an algorithm using natural language processing, machine learning and deep learning techniques.
Maths project: Innovating for Seqwater
Maths students in our Capstone Operations Research unit partnered with Seqwater to optimise contingency water carting operations in South East Queensland for off-grid communities during times of drought.
Work placement: Software development
IT student Kelvin O’Shea completed a four-week internship with Tanda, where he redesigned the company’s Time Clock app: a product used by Tanda’s customers for tracking staff attendance. Kelvin helped conceptualise new features for Time Clock, redesigning its appearance and functionality.
IT project: Gamifying superannuation
A team of final-year IT students spent a year with QSuper investigating new ways to increase customer engagement and attract new markets. The students explored innovative IT solutions and developed a working prototype of a gamified approach to sell and educate the market on superannuation.
