During your time as a Dean's Scholar, you are expected to uphold the core program values:

Participation

You are expected to:

  • consistently demonstrate campus participation aligned with your defined personal goals and values
  • regularly attend special faculty, industry and program events.

Academic achievement

You must maintain a consistent semester GPA of at least 6.0.

Your pathway into the program

There are two different pathways into the Dean's Scholars Program.

If you are a merit-based scholarship recipient and have started your studies at QUT after completing secondary school, you will be eligible to apply in your first year. All other students will be eligible to apply for the program after completing their first year of university.

Requirements

Meet the eligibility criteria

The program is initially open to domestic and international students with outstanding academic ability and leadership potential who are:

  • entering university directly from Year 12, or who have taken no more than one gap year after completing Year 12
  • starting university for the first time on the basis of Year 12 results.
Be the recipient of a merit-based scholarship

Merit-based scholarships are awarded before the commencement of study.

You will need to be awarded one of the following merit-based scholarship to be considered for first year entry into the Dean's Scholars Program:

Actively participate in professional development opportunities

You will need to demonstrate a willingness to explore opportunities and seek personal growth through early engagement with the broader QUT leadership and development community through the:

  • QUT College of Excellence
  • QUT Leadership and Development program.

Meet the GPA requirements

You must achieve a GPA of 6.0 or above in the first semester of your course.

Attend an information session

If you meet the eligibility requirements, you will be invited to attend an introductory information session for the program. Here you will have the chance to share ideas and ask questions in preparation for submitting your application.

Attendance is compulsory for a place in the program.

Submit your application

We will outline the application process and let you know opening and closing dates at the information session.

Applying in 2nd year or later

Requirements

Meet the eligibilty criteria

This pathway is for second, third or fourth year students who have at least two semesters of study remaining.

You may wish to apply if you:

  • were not successful in previous applications to the program and wish to apply again
  • did not receive a merit-based scholarship for eligibility on the first year pathway
  • have transferred to QUT after completing relevant course units at another institution
  • have commenced tertiary study more than 12 months after completing year 12.
Demonstrate self-led development and social impact

You will need to demonstrate a willingness to explore opportunities and seek personal growth through consistent engagement and contribution. As a student with more undergraduate experience than first year applicants, your selection to the program is based on:

  • a more developed sense of self and purpose
  • meaningful contributions within your communities
  • a good understanding of how your actions impact others.

You must have achieved a GPA of 6.5 or above.

Attend an information session

If you meet the eligibility requirements, you will be invited to attend an introductory information session for the program. Here you will have the chance to share ideas and ask questions in preparation for submitting your application.

Attendance is compulsory for a place in the program.

We will outline the application process and let you know opening and closing dates at the information session.

What happens next?

The selection process

We select up to 40 students to join the program each year, including:

  • up to 35 first-year students
  • five students who have finished at least one year of their course.

We will review GPA results after Semester 2 census date, usually before the mid-semester break.

If you meet the minimum GPA requirement you will be invited by email to register your interest in the program. We will send all correspondence relating to the selection process to you by email.

Some selection activities take place during the mid-semester break and during the first two weeks of the summer holidays. You must attend all selection activities for a place in the program.

Flexibility in forward planning is essential if you wish to be selected for the program.

Successful applications

We will let you know if your application is successful or unsuccessful in January.

Induction camp

If your application is successful, you will be required to attend an induction camp in February.

Your leadership journey begins

Each Dean's Scholar then embarks on their own leadership journey. Your participation and activity in the program will be centred around your individual interests and priorities.

The SEADS advantage

QUT Science and Engineering Alumni of the Dean's Scholar's (SEADS) Program brings together graduates and current Dean's Scholars. As a Dean's Scholar and a member of SEADS, you'll access networking and professional development opportunities through events with alumni members, industry and QUT.
