Affordances and design guidelines for effective social network platforms

Social network platforms support creation and exchange of user-generated content. However, some have had growth in users and the amount of information exchanged, while many others did not witness significant growth. This is amongst several different types of social networks that have launched more than a decade ago.If we're going to design an effective social network platform that meets user's expectations, what are the affordances and design features of the platform that promote growth? …

An airway chip for screening viral infection mediated immune responses

Respiratory infections such as influenza, SARS-COV-2, COVID-19, and MERS are increasingly prevalent. Complications and related deaths arising from these infections are often the result of a “cytokine storm”, whereby there is an over production of proinflammatory soluble factors by immune cells, which dictates symptoms severity and mortality risk. Recent works showed that immunomodulatory therapy, with or without antiviral agents, may improve recovery outcome. However, the screening of suitable immune-modulatory and antiviral agents relies heavily on animal models which can't capture …

Analysis of weather and electricity prices for solar thermal power applications

Concentrating solar power (CSP) is a technology that utilises mirrors (heliostats) to focuses the sun’s rays on a solar receiver to provide heat that can be stored and used for electricity generation.Control and planning of the use of stored energy would greatly benefit from a detailed understanding of the statistical characteristics of:direct solar irradiation (DNI)other weather variables (e.g. dust in air)electricity prices on the real-time market. The aim of this project will be to develop suitable statistical models that will enable …

Anti-biofilm agents

We have recently shown that nitroxides (sterically hindered versions of nitric oxide) can inhibit bacterial biofilm formation and disperse existing biofilms. Furthermore, nitroxide-containing antibiotics can eradicate mature biofilms. Bacteria, however, are rapidly becoming resistant to many antibiotics. This project involves the synthesis, purification, characterisation and evaluation of new antimicrobials with less propensity for resistance development. …

Application of molecular dynamics in geomaterials

Expansive soil has wide application in industry and research. An example includes compacted bentonite which can be used in landfill cover and as a buffer barrier in nuclear deep geological deposition. If these materials undergo desiccation, it can experience a significant volume decrease. This compromises the integrity and function of these geostructures, threatening their safety and reliability. In this project, we'll study molecular dynamics to investigate the underlying mechanism of bentonite's behaviour during drying and provide guidance for material improvement. …

Augmented reality (AR) applications for robotic scene understanding

Augmented reality (AR), or mixed reality, has become a mature technology with many possible practical applications in manufacturing, retail, navigation and entertainment. We're interested in using AR to support human-robot interaction. In this project, you'll investigate how a human can use AR to better understand how a robot perceives the world and to understand the robot's intentions.

Augmented sociality and enabling a participatory experience of augmented reality

We're seeking brilliant and highly motivated students to work on an Australian Research Council-funded project. Our goal is to transform augmented reality (AR) from a hyper-specialised tool for power users, into an enabler of creativity, socialisation, and new forms of community. We want everyday users to be able to augment reality as they wish and share such newly-created experiences with their friends, family, and community.

Automating drone traffic management systems

Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) describes a set of systems, services and procedures that will be developed to manage drone (unmanned aircraft systems/unmanned aerial vehicle/remotely piloted aircraft system) operations in and around our cities, including package delivery and inspection tasks and passenger transport.Essentially, UTM is a new air traffic control system for drones with high levels of automation and advanced features. We are developing powerful and scalable technologies that allow thousands of drones to operate safely in our skies. …

Avatar customisation for diversity training in virtual reality

Avatar representation is found to be crucial for user engagement in various types of applications and user identifications with avatars. This project aims to design and develop an environment where users can customize their avatars by looking at a virtual mirror. In this project, where users will be trained in diversity awareness, it is crucial for them to feel like the character who is in the scenario. The outcome of the project will be used in experiments to test the …

Benefitting from effective BPM governance

Governance is an established success factor for Business Process Management (BPM) initiatives. However, the following are not very well understood:what exactly contributes to effective BPM governancediverse governance models to suit different organisational, process and BPM project contextsthe impact of BPM governance. This study aims to address this gap.

Beyond sentiment analysis: identifying affect in reflective text

Sentiment analysis has become a highly valued form of text analysis, particularly for companies who want to distil customer sentiment from social media. As a result, it is an active area of Natural Language Processing (NLP) research. However, much of the work is concerned with the accuracy of positive and negative classification. When it comes to more nuanced analysis of affect and emotion, the research is much more limited. This project will focus on developing approaches to nuanced analysis of affect …

Big data analysis to aid ecological research

We're looking for multiple students to help us answer the question: 'How can we utilise information technology to aid ecological research?'Sensor networks bring ecologists and pattern recognition researchers together to make some applications possible. These applications include assessing risks from potential bird collisions, unobtrusive observations (where the presence of humans changes some animal behaviours) and studying spatial and temporal variation in biological processes. With a significant amount of data being collected from these applications, processing and mining this data is challenging. …
