World-leading green-energy physicist joins QUT

ARC Laureate Fellow and physicist Professor Dmitri Golberg will join 800 physics researchers at the Asia Pacific Physics Conference in Brisbane this week (December 4 to 8).

Professor Golberg, who will take up a position in QUT’s Science and Engineering Faculty in March as research capacity building professor, is currently at Japan’s National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) and will speak about nanostructure property analysis in a transmission electron microscope at the conference.

The prestigious Australian Laureate Fellowships are granted to researchers of international reputation to initiate and support ground-breaking, internationally competitive research.

In his new role, Professor Golberg will  investigate new materials and their structural and green-energy applications using in situ transmission electron microscopy.

“This project aims to develop materials for structural and green energy applications," he said.

“Using spatially-resolved, dynamic, in situ transmission electron microscopy we will research the fundamental mechanical, electrical, thermal, optical, optoelectronic and photovoltaic properties of diverse nanostructures.

“These techniques measure the response of nanomaterials, including one-dimensional nanotubes and nanowires, and two-dimensional graphene-like nanosheets, to external mechanical, electrical, optical and thermal stimuli.”

Professor Golberg will develop new ultralight and super-strong structural composites and ‘green-energy’ nanomaterials.

“These new materials could be used for improved solar cells, touch panels, batteries, supercapacitors, field-effect transistors, light sensors and displays.”

Professor Golberg was one of the first scientists to initiate research on boron nitride nanotubes. His current research involves the electromechanical, thermal and optoelectronic property measurements of individual nanotubes, nanowires and nanosheets inside transmission electron microscopes.

QUT School of Chemistry, Physics and Mechanical Engineering head Professor John Bell said Professor Golberg’s appointment was critical in the development of QUT’s research and technology.

“Professor Golberg will add significant strengths to our leading research in nanotechnology, particularly in the area of green energy,” Professor Bell said.

“We have signed an MOU with NIMS on the collaboration between it and QUT on this project that Professor Golberg will lead.”

The Joint 13th Asia Pacific Physics Conference and 22nd Australian Institute of Physics Congress will be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from December 4-8.
