QUT Outstanding Alumni Awards: Science and Engineering Faculty winner announced

28th September 2020

Julian Anderson, a highly regarded international leader with a career spanning over four decades in quantity surveying and cost engineering, has been honoured with the QUT Science and Engineering Faculty Outstanding Alumni Award.

Julian Anderson is a founding shareholder, Global Board member and President of Rider Levett Bucknall, a global quantity surveying and project management firm.

Julian oversees the management of 22 offices across the USA, Canada and the Caribbean. The leading independent organisation provides cost management, quantity surveying, project management and advisory services to the global property, construction and facilities industry.

With more than 230 people under his remit as President, Julian has had a profound impact on the firm’s success through shepherding their intercontinental growth into the North American market, leading technological innovations, and initiating sustainability practices that are now considered state law. He continues to provide advice to clients on the procurement and cost management of construction projects as well as acting as an expert witness in mediations, arbitrations and litigations.

Patrick Edwards, Vice President of Burns & McDonnell (an engineering and architecture consulting firm), has known Julian for nearly thirty years, and expressed his admiration for Julian’s strong work ethic, also noting their collaborations have been some of the most memorable projects.

“Throughout his career, Julian has invested in long term relationships with no expectation of reciprocity; he is selfless in his willingness to share information.

“Julian consistently leverages and shares the resources of his firm at a local, state and national level.

“This information sharing can often be commoditised; however with Julian, it is offered freely in order to expand knowledge and create information decisions.”

Whilst many industry leaders with Julian’s level of experience work for a multitude of organisations in their career, he has committed 44 years of service to one. He attributes this longevity to a shared embodiment of values and appreciation of his ‘Ohana’ – meaning his diverse employee family and networks. Julian has been integral in shaping the Rider Levett Bucknall workforce and its values and believes developing this sense of family and cultural diversity in his people and projects is fundamental to innovation and future-proofing the company.

Julian's experience encompasses everything from small projects to complex projects valued at several billion dollars. As a veteran advisor, Julian is renowned for his dedication to his profession and quest for continuous improvement in his industry, crediting his resourceful attitude and career success to his humble beginnings as an undergraduate student at QUT.
