QUT's STIMulate program has been recognised for education excellence and delivering outstanding learning programs after recently receiving three prestigious awards:
- Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT) - Program Award for Programs that Enhance Learning, along with a $25000 prize
- Wharton Reimagine Education Award – Oceania Region Gold Award
- Wharton Reimagine Education Award - Presence Learning Gold Award
The AAUT awards were presented in Canberra by Minister for Education and Training Simon Birmingham to celebrate individuals and groups who have made outstanding contributions to enhancing student learning outcomes and equipping students to be agile and creative citizens.
The prestigious Wharton Reimagine Education Awards are the global awards for innovative higher education pedagogies that enhance learning and employability.
There were 13 staff and 169 student volunteers who made up the winning STIMulate team for these awards. The program is an innovative support-for-learning program that engages thousands of students annually to boost their success in maths, science and IT. Distinctively, STIMulate's whole-of-institution approach is premised on systemic and sustainable collaborations between staff, students and across the university.
STIMulate Student Support Officer Eleanor Dyson explains the strong community that surrounds the program as "a community of like-minded students who are coming together to support each other to be as successful as they can be."
The program caters for diverse student abilities and ambitions, from the struggling who aspire to pass, to the high-achievers who wish to excel. STIMulate Coordinator Ian Lightbody says "we have an underlying philosophy of using a social justice framework, which means that we provide access to all students and we also value the student voice in all we do".
The program's success is demonstrated by enhanced student learning in target areas and career-enhancing outcomes for participating students. Or as Peer Learning Facilitator Sara Jane Selmon describes it: "I love helping the students and it's that moment when they get it when I just feel like my job here is awesome".
