QUT technology researcher Professor Clinton Fookes has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright Senior Scholarship to travel to New York to investigate large-scale video surveillance systems.

Professor Fookes will work in the Media Lab of the City College of New York on one of the crucial missing capabilities of current state-of-the-art systems – the ability to search for people of interest.

The visit will also enable him to assess the impacts, drivers and impediments of video analytics in one of the busiest and most dynamic cities in the world.

Professor Fookes said he would head to the USA in early October for the four-month research trip.

“The project will explore the practical and policy reasons for the lack of adoption of large-scale video analytic systems for monitoring our cities to inform future research endeavours,” he said.

“I will also be working with some of the leading policing and defence organisations – such as the FBI and NYPD – that deploy this technology.”

Professor Fookes is a Professor in Vision and Signal Processing and part of the Speech, Audio, Image and Video Technologies group within the Science and Engineering Faculty at QUT.

His key research areas include computer vision, machine learning and pattern recognition (including video surveillance), biometrics, human-computer interaction, airport security and operations, and complex systems.

He is currently the Head of Discipline for Vision and Signal Processing and was also the technical director for the Airports of the Future collaborative research initiatives.

His previous honours include the Australian Institute of Policy and Science’s Young Tall Poppy award and an Australian Museum Eureka Prize.

The QUT alumnus completed his MBA, PhD and aerospace avionics degrees all at QUT.
