As robots move into public spaces, homes and businesses, their effectiveness will be determined by their agility to manoeuver across a variety of terrains and how they manage human interactions.
Consider, for instance, the experience of two people walking toward one another on a sidewalk. At some point, both decide to step to the side to avoid one another. Sometimes this experience is seamless, sometimes not. And when it is not, it usually takes us a couple of goes to untangle who goes to which side as we both react to the other.
Now consider the same scenario with a robot. The algorithms driving its behaviour and the engineering of its manoeuvrability will determine how a robot responds.
