Development of structural walling system using interlockable dry stack concrete blocks

Structural/ non-structural walls add significantly to construction cost and time; one of the main contributors to this is the need for highly skilled masons whose number is on the decline. This situation adds to the woes of housing affordability particularly to the younger generation in Australia. With a view to addressing this problem, Adbri Masonry has developed an interlocking dry stackable hollow concrete blocks and obtained international patent. These blocks can be used as lego blocks by semi/unskilled labour for …

Structural bushfire performance of lightweight and fire resistant wall panels

This project will investigate the structural bushfire performance of lightweight and fire-resistant, cement-based blocks and wall panels. It includes axial compression tests and fire resistance tests of individual blocks currently available in the industry. The performance will be summarized based on the raw materials and the mix proportion of the blocks. …

How safe are our wall structures under the shadow of increased seismic hazard level in AS1170.4?

In 2018, the Australian Earthquake Loading Code AS1170.4 and two major structural design standards (AS3600 and AS3700) have made significant revisions. These changes potentially affect the safety of wall structures that are significant components that save the buildings (especially 3 - 30 stories high) from earthquake events. The AS1170.4 has increased the minimum seismic hazard coefficient from 0.05 to 0.08 (an increase of 60%) across Australia; many major population centers, including Brisbane are affected by this change.Concurrently, the Concrete Structures Design …
