Unlocking cartilage mechanics
When engineers design bearing surfaces, they aim for the hardest, smoothest surfaces they can find. When a bearing surface evolves in nature, however, a different approach is taken.Articular cartilage, the material covering the ends of our joints and letting them articulate, combines a tough network of collagen, entrapping water and a high-swelling proteoglycan matrix. Young’s modulus is only ~10 MPa, and its surface is intentionally rough, yet it can out-perform engineering bearings in terms of lifetime and coefficient of friction, …

Unlocking the Potential of Simplex-Truncated Distributions
This PhD project aims to develop new methods for generating random samples from a specific type of probability distributions called simplex-truncated distributions. These distributions are commonly used in various fields such as statistics, machine learning, and biology. The project will involve the development of new techniques to generate random samples from simplex-truncated distributions. These techniques are based on a method called continuous-time Monte Carlo which is a cutting edge method in statistics that can generate random samples from complex distributions. The main …

Incorporation of the Biphasic plating concept into anatomically contoured locking plates
The Biphasic Plate is a novel fixation concept developed at QUT for the treatment of fractures that is intended to support early full weight bearing. The concept has thus far been developed into an approved implant for distal femur fractures and has been used clinically. However, questions remain surrounding the use of the Biphasic Plate in certain borderline indications. For instance, in certain unstable fracture types, a technique know as double-plating is used to stabilise distal femur fractures, with a …

A paragon of international cooperation? Tracking reporting activities under the Antarctic Treaty System
The Antarctic Treaty System (ATS) – founded upon the Antarctic Treaty (hereafter the ‘Treaty’) – comprises a constellation of agreements to maintain Antarctica as a natural reserve, devoted to peace and science. The Treaty was signed in 1959 by twelve original signatory countries, with an additional seventeen countries acceding since this time as Antarctic Treaty Consultative Parties who participate in the decision-making process (i.e., 29 Consultative Parties in total). Despite this volume of voices, the ATS is regarded as a …
