In running based sports, there is an enduring belief by coaches that excessive anterior pelvic tilt during sprinting is a significant risk factor for hamstring strain injury, however only one underpowered prospective study exists to explore this belief, with all other data being theoretical. One road block to larger prospective studies is the current need for athletes to attend biomechanical laboratories to have their pelvic kinematics assessed. Providing legal evidence for non-accidental scald burn injury
Although most burn injuries are completely accidental in nature, they can also occur due to neglect or abuse. Burn clinicians are often required to ascertain if the patient history and the wound are consistent with accidental or non-accidental injury. If the case goes to court, the clinician will prepare a medico-legal report as evidence. Developing predictive models, methods and analytics for complex sports data
A 3-year strategic partnership on sports data science between the Centre for Data Science (CDS), the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) was launched in the past few months. Identifying protein and metabolite markers of burn injury and trauma
It can be difficult for clinical teams to determine the severity of burn injuries when the patient first presents to the hospital. This is because burn wounds continue to deepen/progress over time, in a process known as burn wound conversion. Some wounds may deepen over days or weeks and require aggressive surgical treatment e.g. grafting, and some wounds don’t progress, stay superficial in depth, and they can be managed conservatively with the application of different bandages or dressings. The economics of transport and work-related injuries in Australia: a population-based cohort study
Injury is a major contributor to mortality, morbidity, and permanent disability, and imposes a significant burden on the Australian health system. A better understanding of the burden, models of care, and economic drivers of injury will help design cost-effective injury prevention and treatment strategies to minimize the incidence and burden of the disease while improving injury outcomes.
