Probing the mid-crust in the Paleoproterozoic

The further back in time, evidence for the hallmark of plate tectonics - the volcanic arc - becomes increasingly fragmentary and reliant on geochemistry. Research through the West African Exploration Initiative has identified one of the best preserved ancient arcs, the ~2.3 billion year-old Toumodi sequence in the Ivory Coast. This research project feeds into better characterising this volcanic arc and associated elements to the arc. The VRES project will examine minerals contained in lavas to probe the mid crust. …

Understanding why and where lithium minerals occur in Queensland

Lithium is an important component of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that are used to power portable electronics devices such as cell phones, laptops and vehicles. Because of this importance, lithium is considered an energy-critical metal necessary for clean energy and a green future. Lithium prospects in Queensland appear to be of the pegmatite type, best known around Georgetown, but prospects are also known around Mount Garnet and Stanthorpe, and exploration has recently extended into Cape York. The aim of this project is …

5G and IoT smart ontology learning

This project aims to investigate privacy preservation protocols in a 5G integrated IoT environment through an analysis of the depth of smart-device use in common smart domains. 5G’s addition to IoT-based smart devices will be effectively deployed and utilised by a large majority of individual and organisation-based users. The knowledge-based ontology and tools developed in the project will help form the new privacy preservation mechanisms that are required for the 5G enabled environment. The development of an ontology for 5G enabled …

Visualising 2D nanopatterns with atom-scale microscopy

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is a tool that lets us image molecules and surfaces with atomic resolution - we can "see" individual atoms. QUT has recently acquired a microscope that lets us visualise the formation a molecular layer at the solution/solid interface, giving us unprecedented insight into how molecules can for into intricate patters at surfaces.

Citizen-developers: challenges and opportunities for low-code/no-code automation

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is becoming a popular choice for organisations to support their digital transformation and to maintain operational resilience. Many organisations are keen to adopt Robotic Process Automation (RPA) to dramatically improve operational efficiency. Many organisations train and assign their staff as “citizen-developer” to design, test, and maintain the bots using Low-Code/No-Code platforms. However, there are number of issues surfaced when using organisational employees as citizen developer ranging from technical & process capabilities to scalability of RPA.

The dark side of robotic process automation

Pandemics such as COVID 19 have forced organisations to pursue hyper-automation to maintain operational sustainability. Many organisations are keen to adopt Robotic Process Automation (RPA) to dramatically improve operational efficiency. However, evidence to date highlighted various associated challenges associated with adoption of RPA in organisations.Furthermore, recent surveys by consultant organisations found a high RPA project fail rate and their inability to meet the expected return on investment.

Alleviating corruption: a data driven perspective

Corruption is cited as among the greatest challenges faced by government and citizenry the world over and threatens to undermine the very trust that is essential for a functioning democratic society. In order to earn and maintain public trust, governments at all levels must continuously strive to reduce corruption and uphold the highest levels of integrity.Amidst the countless human interactions and electronic transactions that occur within the public service on a daily basis are a complex and ever-changing variety of …

Parameter identifiability for stochastic processes in biological systems

Stochastic models are used in biology to account for inherent randomness in many cellular processes, for example gene regulatory networks. Noise is often thought to obscure information, however, there is an increasing understanding that some randomness contains vitally important information about underlying biological processes. When applying these models to interpret and learn from data, unknown parameters in the model need to be estimated. However, not all data will contribute to a given estimation task regardless of the data quantity and quality. …

From LiDAR or drone imagery to structural geometries

LiDAR geo-spatial data (3D coordinates) are freely available from government websites such as "QSpatial data portal". Alternatively, the use of drones have also become popular in aerial surveys and imagery. The geospatial data from these sources include 3D coordinates of various built structure. The data can be downloaded (in case of LiDAR) or processed from images (in case of drone survey) to create actual 3D picture of building structures. This work is commonly done using rendering software. The use of this …

Security analysis of open-source software

Several open-source projects drive modern-day IT applications. However, some open-source projects get compromised by malicious attackers, who include malware to the code to compromise the security of the application users. This project will investigate approaches for securing the open-source software.

Time-series analysis of 2D diffraction patterns for Synchrotron rock physics

The interaction between deformation, fluid flow, chemical reactions, and heat flow in rocks constitutes a research frontier in the Earth Sciences. In addition to fundamental academic interest in this subject, there are many applied industrial problems, which require a sound understanding of this coupling. Examples include: the long-term sequestration of carbon dioxide in rocks, the energy-efficient processing of future-mineral resources, the design of unconventional geothermal-energy operations, and the prediction of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The advisory team pioneered new methods for …

Investigating factors impacting urban heat vulnerability in subtropical cities

In recent years, with the rise in climate change impact, urban heat has become a major issue for many cities to tackle consequently. Extreme heat events are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change, which has directly caused a substantial increase in heat-related morbidity and mortality. This indispensably puts an extra burden on medical systems and national finance. Meanwhile, the urban heat island effect has been exaggerating the consequences caused by the increased extreme heat in metropolitan areas. …
