Shining a light on climate-relevant aerosol over the Southern Ocean
Current climate models strongly underestimate the proportion of solar radiation that is reflected away from earth over the Southern Ocean.Marine aerosols play an important role in this process by both directly scattering this incoming radiation and affecting cloud properties. However it is challenging to deploy suitable instruments and obtain detailed analysis of aerosols in this remote region. This research investigates whether optical measurements can offer a simplified method to characterise the aerosol on the basis of wavelength-dependent differences in light scattering.
