Mathematically optimising value of information for biodiversity management
When planning environmental management, data are only valuable if they lead to improved outcomes. As new monitoring technologies and approaches are developed, it is critical that they are used optimally to focus on the most important information gaps.Monitoring technologies should only be adopted if they can deliver improved management utility, and new data should be rapidly gathered in locations where early information could offer warning signals of future ecosystem change. Mathematical and statistical approaches to assessing the value of new …

Road map to local circular communities: strategies, barriers, enablers.
The textile industry is one of the world’s largest, with global sales in 2016 of USD 1.5 trillion. It is also one of the most polluting industries, producing 20% of global wastewater, and contributing to 10% of carbon emissions. Fashion generates large amounts of waste, and has negative social and health impacts for workers.Circular economy would address these issues, keep clothes and textiles at their highest value and keep clothes in continuous circulation. The transformation of the sector requires a …

Atmospheric cooling and shading for the Great Barrier Reef
This research sits within the Cooling and Shading Subprogram of the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program (RRAP).RRAP is an ambitious and innovative R&D effort that places Australia as the leader of coral reef adaptation and restoration science. It is a consortium of Partners, including QUT, dedicated to creating an innovative toolkit of interventions to help the Reef resist, adapt to, and recover from the impacts of climate change. These partners include the Australian Institute of Marine Science, CSIRO, the Great …

Carbonate Sediment dynamics from the Southern Great Barrier Reef Coral Sea
The southern extent of the modern Great Barrier Reef (GBR) marks the transition from tropical to subtropical ocean conditions. The shelf edge and upper slope in this vast area of the southern GBR were poorly mapped when compared to the north. Very little systematic multibeam seafloor mapping had been done in the southern GBR with most datasets collected opportunistically while in transit.New bathymetry, backscatter data, and sediments samples extend our understanding of eastern Australia’s palaeoshorelines and provide a basis for …

Developing optimal management approaches to sustain the Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is under significant threat from climate change. There are many options for management approaches to help sustain the reef, and many more are being developed. However, optimally planning these management actions is a difficult mathematical problem as they need to deploy over a large scale. This results in long timeframes for developing and executing these actions. This project will involve adapting the Modern Portfolio Theory to develop optimal management approaches to sustain the Great Barrier Reef.Modern Portfolio Theory …

Assessing coral rubble restoration on the Great Barrier Reef
Coral reefs face cumulative threats from climate change to shipping and the concern is that this can cause reefs to transition from coral to rubble dominated states. The formation of coral rubble is a natural part of the reef cycle, however, too much rubble can decrease the resilience of reefs and prevent recovery. A number of coral rubble stabilisation methods are being utilised globally including Mars Assisted Reef Restoration System of hexagonal metal units that are deployed on reefs with …
