Glycerol is a low-cost and effective organic solvent to pretreat lignocellulosic biomass for enhancing the yields of fermentable sugars.
In the glycerol pretreatment process, it also generates a number of sugar derivatives and lignin depolymerisation products. Some of these by-products can be used in the biological, nutraceutical and cosmetic industries and, as such, have value being extracted from the process.
This project aims to uncover methods to recover and characterise valuable by-products from the glycerol-based biorefinery process.
