Community arts, community broadcasting and Indigenous media producers all face the challenge of digital media and user led innovation. This project brings these systems together to test how existing infrastructure and new media affordances can be combined to stimulate broad-based innovation through creative participation.

In an exciting era of user-generated content and massive media change there seem to be more opportunities than ever before for people to make and distribute their own media, but there are still major obstacles to population-wide creative participation in digital culture.
This national project brings together a team of expert researchers and leading agencies in community arts, community media and Indigenous media, to explore how these sectors are responding to the challenge of participatory digital media and user-led innovation. In particular, the project focuses on uses of Digital Storytelling production techniques, and other emerging co-creative methods of media production.
The core hypothesis is that existing community arts and media agencies have significant potential to facilitate creative participation in digital media culture across the breadth of Australian communities, but that there are also impediments to be addressed.
Through a series of field experiments and demonstrator projects, this research is considering how the value of co-creative media can be optimized through existing community infrastructure; and how knowledge about co-creative methods and outputs can be accessed and propagated in Industry Partner networks.
