Whilst there are theoretical models predicting aerosol deposition in different regions in the lung, there is only limited experimental data available on aerosol regional deposition and almost no data on regional deposition of combustion aerosol. Comparison of experimental and theoretical assessment of total deposition of combustion aerosols indicates that there is a discrepancy between these two. There is currently no explanation for the discrepancy. In order to develop a better understanding of health risk created by inhalation of combustion aerosols and to identify ways for removal of combustion aerosol deposited in the lung before the aerosol penetrates to the blood system, the project will aims to explain the physical mechanisms of particle deposition in the lung through experimental and mathematical modeling approaches.
