What is the purpose of this research?

The purpose of this study is to test whether it is feasible and acceptable to provide either a videocall/telephone counselling program or a check-in call and printed information pack to family carers of people with dementia who may be moving into permanent residential care. We would also like to see if either type of support is beneficial to family carers’ psychological health and emotional well-being.

Are you looking for people like me?

You may be eligible if:

  • you provide support or assistance to a relative or friend with dementia
  • the person with dementia has an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) approval to move into a residential aged care facility or nursing home, and
  • you are aged 18 years or older, speak English and have sufficient hearing to participate.

What will you ask me to do?

If you agree to take part in this study, you will be randomly allocated to one of two groups:

Group 1 will receive a counselling support program (via video-call or phone) and a printed information pack. You will be asked to:

  • complete a questionnaire before and after the program (2 hours in total)
  • take part in 6 support sessions over 12 weeks which will be delivered by a specially trained counsellor with dementia expertise (6 hours in total), and
  • be interviewed about your experience upon completing the program (30 minutes).

Group 2 will receive a check-in phone call and a printed information pack about residential aged care, coping with placement, managing feelings, working in partnership with residential care staff, and support services offered by Dementia Australia. You will be asked to:

  • complete a questionnaire before and after the program (2 hours in total)
  • receive a check-in phone call (30 minutes), and
  • be interviewed about your experience upon completing the program (30 minutes).

Are there any risks for me in taking part?

There are some risks associated with your participation on this project. We are aware that some of the questions asked and topics discussed might contribute to your emotional distress. If you experience any anxiety or distress during any contact with the study researchers or counsellors, and/or you are in need of continued emotional support at any time during or at the end of the study, you may contact free counselling and support services using the details provided.

Are there any benefits for me in taking part?

You may find it helpful to receive counselling support or printed support resources. This project may also benefit family carers of people with dementia in the future by providing evidence of appropriate support.

Will I be compensated for my time?

No financial compensation is provided.
