QUT Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Margaret Sheil said Professor Yates, who is Head of the School of Nursing and director of Queensland’s Centre for Palliative Care Research and Education, was only the 10th academic to be awarded the title at QUT.
Professor Sheil added that Professor Yates was highly regarded for her leadership in improving the quality of life for people who have cancer, and forging strong links between research, policy and practice.
“Professor Yates is a researcher of national and international distinction. Earlier this year, she became the first researcher from outside of North America to receive the prestigious Distinguished Researcher award from the international Oncology Nursing Society,” Professor Sheil said.
“Furthermore, Professor Yates has received continuous competitive funding for her research program from a range of sources and has demonstrated an extraordinary track record across a breadth and depth of cancer-related research over some 20 years.
“She is also recognised for her work in translating evidence into practice through innovative education and health service delivery initiatives at state, national, and international level.
“The award of Distinguished Professor is conveyed on our most outstanding academics. In the case of Professor Yates, it provides appropriate recognition of both distinction in her field, and undoubted potential for ongoing excellence.”
Professor Yates also has a distinguished record of service to the community and professional groups. She is the immediate past President of Palliative Care Australia and began a four-year term as President of the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care in July.
She has previously received awards including the Tom Reeve Oration Award for Outstanding Contribution to Cancer Care and Life Membership from the Cancer Nurses Society of Australia as well as the Clinical Oncological Society of Australia. In 2010, she was awarded a Citation from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning.
A fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, Professor Yates was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame in 2017.
QUT is part of a national collaborative group of five major Australian universities that form the ATN (Australian Technology Network of Universities).
