Our research leads advancements in various fields ranging from robotics and autonomous systems through to information security and computer human interaction.

Research disciplines

Our strength in robotics and computer vision has seen us appointed as the lead node of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Robotic Vision, which has received $25.6 million of funding for a seven-year research program.

We also play a leading role at the Brisbane-based Australian Research Centre for Aerospace Automation (AARCA), which researches the various practical uses of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Our researchers are providing major contributions to a number of multidisciplinary projects in the new and exciting field of data science, helping to turn information into knowledge.

A number of our expert researchers are delivering capability into QUT's multidisciplinary Institute for Future Environments (IFE). Projects we are working on include the development of future energy systems and clean technologies, the design and deployment of intelligent systems and machines that are responsive to their environments, and protection of critical information and communication networks.

Awards and recognition

  • Dr Anjali Jaiprakash was awarded an Advance Queensland Research Fellowship in 2016 for developing a robotic leg-holding device, which makes keyhole knee-surgery easier and safer.
  • Dr Yateendra Mishra received an Advance Queensland Research Fellowship in 2016 for his research into maximising renewable energy penetration through smart inverter deployment and control.
  • Professor Peta Wyeth was awarded an Office for Learning & Teaching Grant for Framing Authentic Assessment of Service Learning within an IT Curriculum.
  • Associate Professor Michael Milford received the Queensland Young Tall Poppy Scientist of the Year award for his stealth mission to teach science and mathematics to the masses, without them realising.
  • Dr Matthew Dunbabin and Dr Feras Dayoub, and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation won the $750,000 public vote in the 2016 Google Impact Challenge to create the RangerBot: a low-cost, vision-enabled autonomous underwater vehicle that will combat various marine issues on the reef.
  • Professor Clinton Fookes has been awarded a Fulbright Senior Scholarship to investigate large-scale video surveillance systems in New York.
  • Associate Professor Geoff Walker was awarded a US$30,000 Google Little Box academic award in 2014 for his work in the area of increasing the power density for DC to AC power conversion.
