Professor Simon Washington, a highly-regarded transport engineer and planner from the United States, has joined the academic ranks at Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

Professor Washington has a split appointment between QUT's Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety - Queensland (CARRS-Q) and the Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering (BEE).

Prior to joining QUT, Professor Washington was director of the Safe Transportation Research & Education Center at the University of California, Berkeley.

He has also held positions at UC Berkeley, the Arizona State University, the University of Arizona and the Georgia Institute of Technology.

His research interests span a variety of areas including research into the human and engineering causes and mechanisms associated with transport system related crashes, sustainable transport issues such as non-motorized travel, and air quality and global warming impacts of transport.

As a leader in his field, Professor Washington has authored or co-authored more than 70 peer reviewed articles and is lead author on the textbook Statistical and Econometric Methods for Transportation Data Analysis.

"The transport system is arguably the single most important system that impacts day-to-day quality of life of Australians as well as the long term economic viability of urban regions and the nation," Professor Washington said.

"I am encouraged by the willingness of the Australian government to consider innovative solutions to extremely complex, multi-disciplinary transport problems, and look forward to working with the broad academic and professional community moving forward."

In addition to his roles at QUT, Professor Washington has been appointed Transport and Main Roads (TMR) chair of Transport—a position that will integrate Professor Washington's activities with the Queensland professional transport community.

Professor Washington is also a member of QUT's Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation.
