QUT has risen in the latest prestigious international rankings compiled by Times Higher Education (THE) to be equal 179th among the world’s top 200 universities.
The 2020 THE World University Rankings were announced overnight at the THE World Academic Summit in Zurich.
The 2020 list is the largest compiled by THE in the 16 years of rankings, and includes 1396 universities from 92 countries and regions – an increase on the 1258 institutions across 86 territories ranked last year.
QUT was last year in the 201-250 band; the new world ranking of 179 places the university as 9th among the 35 Australian universities included.
The THE World University Rankings assess research-intensive universities across their core goals of teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
In the latest tables, QUT has increased its international standing across four of the five benchmarked areas and, in particular, in the areas of the teaching and learning environment and research volume, citations and influence.
QUT Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Margaret Sheil said the results were outstanding for a young university, and a recognition of the university’s sustained focus on providing quality education and conducting research that has real world, global impact.
“Rankings give universities an opportunity to see how they are performing on the world stage, and it is very rewarding to receive this latest acknowledgment,” Professor Sheil said.
“The results build on growth in the THE rankings over the past few years, and reflect our strong and ongoing investments in teaching and learning, graduate employability, research output, and engagement with industry.
“We are continuing to grow and excel in key focus areas of improving student experiences, providing practically-oriented teaching and work integrated learning, and research which has an impact on an international scale.
“It is also very pleasing to see in these results that our relevance to industry continues to strengthen with our global knowledge transfer ranking also rising.”
