25th July 2022

QUT will welcome visitors on Sunday, July 31, for the first full, in-person QUT Open Day in three years.

The event will be held across QUT’s Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove campuses from 9am to 3pm.

Gardens Point campus, in Brisbane’s city heart, will host campus tours and information tents and seminars for all study areas – architecture and built environment, business, creative industries, education, engineering, health, information technology, justice, law, mathematics and science.

Kelvin Grove campus will host tours of the campus and selected facilities.

It’s a day for everyone – current high school students, mature-age students, international students and their families and friends.

Here are some of the highlights and tips to get the most out of QUT Open Day.

Before the day:

On the day (Gardens Point):

  • Talk to staff and students from all study areas at information tents
  • Attend information sessions about courses, scholarships and uni life
  • Soak up the atmosphere and enjoy live music by students
  • Grab a bite to eat at the cafes and sausage sizzle
  • Visit the library, pool, gym, and gallery spaces
  • Take a guided campus tour (leaving from U Block every 15 minutes from 9am to 2.30pm)
  • Take a facilities tour (eg science labs, medical imaging facilities, library, eSports Arena)
  • Visit The Cube in the Science and Engineering Centre (P Block)

On the day (Kelvin Grove):

  • Take a guided campus tour
  • Take a facilities tour (eg library, clinical simulation centre, dance/drama/music/fashion/film studios)
  • Get some free fairy floss and popcorn
  • Listen to live music from QUT students
  • Visit The Sphere in the Education Precinct (E Block)

Visitors are encouraged to arrive early for all seminars and tours, as numbers will be capped to help with social distancing. If you miss out on a seminar or tour, check the program for alternate times or visit the information tents to ask your questions.

Dozens of QUT student ambassadors will be working at Open Day to take prospective students on tours of both campuses and answer questions at course information tents at Gardens Point.

We caught up with three of our student ambassadors and asked them about their courses and what they’ll be doing at Open Day.

NICOLA GROBLER – Bachelor of Communication / Bachelor of Science (third year)

What will you be doing at Open Day?

“I’m helping out with the tours of our Kelvin Grove campus. I'm most looking forward to introducing people to all our amazing QUT facilities. I can't wait for people to see my go-to study spaces at the Sphere/E Block at Kelvin Grove, and the nursing/paramedic simulator and sound engineering studios are also a must see!  I study at both campuses because of my double degree, so I’m also excited about people having the opportunity to see all the wonderful facilities at Gardens Point, including P Block – our amazing Science and Engineering Centre!”

Why did you choose your course and what do you like about it?

“I chose my course because I want to be a skilled science communicator. The double degree is broad and adaptable to how you want to use it. I'd like to help get more engaging, scientifically accurate information into the public domain. I love that I get to be immersed in both the scientific and creative worlds.”

What has your uni experience been like so far?

“Your uni experience is what you make of it! I moved from Mackay to Brisbane to study at QUT and my uni life has fluctuated between studying in the library, to playing social sport, networking with hopeful eventual employers, and having fun through student clubs.”

What’s your best tip(s) for students trying to choose what to study at uni?

“Definitely consider studying something that interests or excites you, and that you see value in. Think about what you want your career to look like. Do you want consistent daily tasks or project-based work? What does your lifestyle look like? What kind of organisation do you want to work for, or do you want to be your own boss?”

SAMEEL DEOJI – Bachelor of Business / Bachelor of Communication (first year)

What will you be doing at Open Day?

"On Open Day I will be leading prospective students throughout the Gardens Point campus and showing them the vast range of advanced facilities and equipment. Importantly, I will be there to answer any questions parents or students have and inspire them to study at a university. I’m looking forward to taking students on a campus tour, as each building has a unique story and history.”

Why did you choose your course and what do you like about it?

“I chose a double degree in business and communication because I am open to pursuing a career in either television journalism or business management. I liked the option to choose a double degree because I can explore my passions and interests of two different fields simultaneously.”

What has your uni experience been like so far?

“My uni experience so far has been challenging, different and fun. I found adjusting from high school life to uni life challenging and different, as managing your time amongst studies, work and social life is harder with an increased workload. However, this became easier to manage with the clubs I am a part of, such as the Cultural Society of India QUT where I enjoy meeting and spending time with fellow Indians.”

What’s your best tip for students trying to choose what to study at uni?

“Shortlist a few degrees you are interested in and talk to people who have studied that degree or are in the field. These people will give you a real taste of what to expect and you will gauge whether you want to study that course.”

SASKIA LOGAN – Bachelor of Science / Bachelor of Laws (Honours) (second year)

What will you be doing at Open Day?

“I’ll be running campus tours of our gorgeous Gardens Point campus – I’m looking forward to meeting all the fresh faces of interested students, hearing some fantastic live music and really getting involved in the fun and festivities that we missed out on at last year’s open day!”

Why did you choose your course and what do you like about it?

“Like many high school students, I struggled to find which course was right for me. I really enjoyed STEM subjects but was also really involved in debating and literacy – plus I love to talk! So, I decided to have the best of both worlds and do science and law. I love that I can still research and discover the secrets of the universe, and also satisfy my love to connect with people and argue a strong point. The combination of science labs, mock role plays and plenty of research keeps me very engaged. I hope to work in the environmental sphere, and my double degree will give me a unique perspective.”

What has your uni experience been like so far?

“I’ve loved getting involved in extra-curricular clubs and societies, which has helped me meet new people and find a good balance between study, work and social time. I have also enjoyed the autonomy of picking my own timetable and subjects and learning independently. It certainly is a change from high school, given that I moved from Townsville to Brisbane for uni, but I’ve loved every bit along the way.”

What’s your best tip for students trying to choose what to study at uni?

“Focussing on what you love and what motivates you is really important. Another handy tip is to try QUT’s Match My Skills quiz! Surprisingly I didn’t take this quiz when I was deciding, however a few months into my first semester at uni, I took the quiz and it recommended science and law! And always remember that if you want to change your mind, QUT makes it super easy to switch degrees.”
