QUT’s new Chancellor has been officially welcomed to the university during an installation ceremony held at the Gardens Point campus today.
Dr Xiaoling Liu, a company director and minerals industry leader, said she would champion QUT/industry collaboration while working to make a significant contribution to the university for the real world.
“My own personal journey was built on the foundation of a strong education . . . and I hope that my background as a female graduate, who went on to become a senior industry leader, will inspire current and future QUT students,” Dr Liu said.
Dr Liu holds a Bachelor of Engineering from Chongqing University and a PhD in Extractive Metallurgy from Imperial College London.
Passionate about higher education, Dr Liu’s industry experience across several continents provides her with a diverse and global perspective that aligns with the aspirations of many QUT students, graduates and staff.
“QUT is a university that understands the importance of both blue-sky research and of providing graduates with the practical skills, innovative thinking and ability to work with others that employers are looking for,” Dr Liu said.
QUT Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Margaret Sheil said Dr Liu brought diverse experience and a global perspective to the university, combining her business acumen with empathy and personal charm and a deep understanding of the importance of higher education.
“QUT is uniquely placed to respond to both challenges and opportunities and I look forward to working with Dr Liu to forge a bright future for the university and for Queensland.”
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said Dr Liu’s appointment was good news for QUT and even better news for Queensland.
“Dr Liu brings a passion for higher education, technology and industry to QUT. She also brings her exceptional real-world experience and outstanding professional record,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
“She understands our science and technology landscape and has a desire to foster collaboration between QUT and the community.”
Dr Liu has called Australia home since 1988 and, with her family, has lived in both Gladstone and Brisbane.
Guest speakers at the installation ceremony paid tribute to former QUT Chancellor Tim Fairfax AC for his service to the university for the past seven years.
Dr Liu was installed as QUT’s fifth chancellor, following Mr Fairfax (2012-2019), Major General Peter Arnison AC (2004-2012), Dr Cherrell Hirst AO (1994-2004) and Victor Pullar AO (1989-1994).
