5th March 2019

Autumn has arrived and everyone knows what that means … No, it’s not trees dropping leaves (we’re in Brisbane!) – it’s the start of fun run season.

The QUT Classic is one of the big events on Brisbane’s 2019 fun run calendar and will take place on Sunday, April 28, from 7.30am, across picturesque 1km, 5km and 10km courses.

All courses start from QUT’s riverfront Gardens Point campus, and take in the City Botanic Gardens.

The 5km and 10km courses also go over the Goodwill Bridge and along South Bank, with the 10km race continuing past GOMA, around the river bend and along Riverside Drive and back.

Competitors can run, jog, or walk each course.

And, for the first time, this year there’s prize money on offer thanks to sponsorship from Scape Australia.  The 10km winner will receive $500 ($300 for second and $100 for third) and the 5km winner will get $300 ($200 for second and $100 for third).

Earlybird registration prices are available until March 29.

Tom Fisher from QUT Sport said about 1500 people took part in last year’s QUT Classic, with a similar number expected in 2019.

“It’s a family friendly event that caters for all ages – you can even bring a pram – and people are welcome to stay for food and entertainment at our Gardens Point campus after their run or walk,” he said.

“We think out course is one of the most beautiful runs you can do in Brisbane – it’s an amazing experience with the gardens, CBD and Brisbane River as a backdrop.

“You can do a leisurely stroll or go all out for a PB – the choice is yours.”

The QUT Learning Potential Fund – which provides scholarships for low-income students – is the charity partner for the QUT Classic and receives $2 from every registration, with the university then matching that amount.

Mr Fisher said organisers were looking for more volunteers to be part of the 2019 Classic, ranging from people helping at water stations to course marshals.

“It takes a lot of good people to run an event like this and we – and our fun runners – really appreciate their help,” he said.

“Volunteers get to contribute to a great event, and they get some event management experience – and a free t-shirt as a thank you!”
