QUT has joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Abdul Latif Jameel World Education Lab (J-WEL), a worldwide initiative to address opportunities and challenges in education across a learner’s lifespan.
J-WEL was launched in May 2017 and aims to bring together the best minds to transform education and learning worldwide, from pre-kindergarten stage through to higher education and workplace learning.
Collaborating with its members, J-WEL will offer online and in-person collaborations, workshops, research, and information-sharing events led by MIT faculty and staff.
These collaborations will explore new solutions in every area of education across countries, cultures, backgrounds, and ages – from research on learning and curriculum development, to teacher education and public policy.
Professor Carol Nicoll (Executive Dean, Faculty of Education) said that membership with J-WEL is a natural fit with QUT’s vision to lead real world futures.
“J-WEL’s goal is to confront the most pressing problems facing education today and deliver sustainable, scalable, impactful solutions to the world,” Professor Nicoll said.
“Their mission aligns with QUT’s vision to drive transformative change and be the agents of economic and social activity and growth.”
QUT has joined the pre-kindergarten to Year 12 collaborative, and is among a diverse group of initial members, including leading universities, major NGOs, and top companies.
Members of the pre-kindergarten to Year 12 collaborative include Hong Kong-based nonprofit Catalyst Education Lab, Save the Children, and educational technology company EnglishHelper.
J-WEL is an initiative of MIT and Community Jameel, the social enterprise organisation founded by MIT 1978 alumnus Mohammed Jameel. Community Jameel is dedicated to supporting social and economic sustainability across the Middle East.
