QUT set to welcome more than 10,000 new students

8th February 2018

Orientation 2018 begins at QUT next Monday with a mix of fun stuff and serious get-to-know the uni, student life and support services sessions as well as opportunities to meet new people and explore the campuses.

QUT’s new Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Sheil will welcome the more than 10,000 new students at the Official Welcome Party on the Kidney Lawn at Gardens Point campus from 4pm on Monday, February 12

In keeping with QUT tradition, the party will include the Great Reveal of the 2018 design for the free t-shirt for first-year students and the prize presentation to the winning designer.

Those Two Girls from Hit105 will host the party which has The Steele Syndicate as the headline act, along with an Indigenous performance, and a dance performance.

A pancake breakfast opens the week at Gardens Point on Monday and at Kelvin Grove on Tuesday at 8am and there are the famous $2 lunches with free live music (GP Monday to Thursday; KG Tuesday to Thursday). Note: The campuses become ‘GP’ and ‘KG’ to students in no time.

In between times, there will be faculty orientation days, and multiple sessions on other vital uni services like library tours, career development, study skills, writing and spoken presentation skills.

QUT has lots of active clubs, groups and associations that offer the chance of meeting up with like-minded others and work on some great activities and interesting projects together. Sign-on days are GP on Monday, and at KG on Tuesday from 11am to 2pm.

The Come and Try (a new Sport) Day will be held at the massive new QUT Sportsfield at KG on Wednesday 11.30am to 1.30pm.

Anyone with a great idea they want to make come to life should make sure to go to the start-up event for entrepreneurs and innovators on the Kidney Lawn (GP) from 11am to 2pm.

It’s wind-down time from 3pm each day with live music at the QUT Student Guild’s Botanic Bar at GP and the Grove Bar at KG.  Explore Kelvin Grove Urban Village and take in free live music, with food and fun on the Carraway Lawn from 2pm on Thursday with the QUT Student Guild.
