QUT's Cartman wins Amazon Robotics Challenge

Aussie robot 'hands down' winner of Amazon Robotics Challenge: The Australian Centre for Robotic Vision (ACRV), headquartered at QUT, has grabbed the $80,000USD first prize at the 2017 Amazon Robotics Challenge in Japan.

Open Day just the start of 2018 study journey: Well over 10,000 visitors made the most of a gorgeous winter day and streamed into QUT on Sunday, July 30, for the 2017 Open Day. And there are plenty more information avenues for prospective students between now and 2018.

MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS

- The big win by QUT and the Australian Centre for Robotic Vision at the international Amazon Robotics Challenge in Japan was all over social media, including Facebook, Reddit and YouTube, and made TechAU, GizmodoAAP, SBS, The Australian and other News Corp titles, and Japan’s Gigazine. The team’s entry was also covered by Wired, Electronic Component News, Newzeb and e! Science News.

- Campus Morning Mail reported on Adjunct Professor Wil van der Aalst receiving Germany’s richest research prize.
- Professor Matthew Rimmer discussed the looming ‘Glamazon’ trademark battle with ABC News, Radio Australia and My Express.  He also spoke about a tussle to trademark Bondi Beach with 7 News, ABC News, The New Daily.
- Associate Professor Gary Mortimer told ABC Radio Perth why surge pricing will never happen in Aussie supermarkets. He joined ABC Brisbane Mornings for the weekly panel discussion on retail and 7 News spoke with him about supermarket meat mark downs. He was on 9 News for a story about Ikea offering a click and collect service while Inside Retail spoke with him about Amart Sports rebranding to Rebel.

- Associate Professor Martin Obschonka’s (pictured) study on what tweets reveal about entrepreneurs including Donald Trump received national and international coverage including Brisbane Times and the Fairfax network, GizmodoABC Canberra Drive, ABC NSW Statewide Drive, Campus Morning Mail, 4ZZZ, Startsat60.com, International Business Times, Daily Mail Online, Yahoo UK, UK Metro, Science Daily, Newsroom America, India’s Business Standard,  India Todayand Germany’s Handelsblatt. A story aired by The Ring Of Fire in the USA also attracted more than 75,000 YouTube views.
- Associate Professor Robert Perrons was interviewed by ABC Southern Queensland and Radio Live New Zealand about the future of cars and Britain’s proposed ban on the sale of petrol and diesel cars.
- Associate Professor Daniel Johnson explained the benefits of grandparents picking up video game controllers on Radio National’s PM
- Dr Rebecca English was interviewed for an ABC News Online story about the pros and cons of taking your child out of school for a year.
- The Courier-Mail, Gold Coast Bulletin and Cairns Post featured QUT’s Robotronica spectacular as a coming event.
- The Australian Financial Review mentioned Aussie startup A Cloud Guru had hired one of the QUT students who designed an alternate Census site during a competition.
- Leith Harding (pictured) spoke to ABC Radio Brisbane (in at 1h:04min) about foster parenting. She also featured on ABC Sunshine Coast.

- Professor John Aaskov’s Ross River Fever expertise found its way into 29 regional papers across Queensland, including the Cairns Post, Warwick Daily News, and Medical Health News. He also spoke with ABC Southern Queensland.
- QUT Creative Industries graduate Alice Foulcher was interviewed for a national News Corp story on her That’s Not Me debut feature film. The Daily Mail also wrote about her.
- Dr Narelle Haworth was on ABC Brisbane Evenings talking about the call for a new road rage law.
- Anthony Truskinger spoke with True Viral News about an ecoacoustics project which is helping PNG’s conservation efforts.
- Dr Grant Hamilton’s research using drones to help find and protect koalas was published in Unmanned Aerial Online .
- Professor Clive Bean told BuzzFeed News that a postal plebiscite on same sex marriage would see young people under-represented, as they would be less likely to vote.
- Michael Klaehn joined ABC Radio Brisbane for a new segment about social media.
- Dr Mary Crawford’s regular Monday guest spot with ABC Radio Brisbane covered the ALP state conference, electricity prices, and the Cross River Rail.
- Overland published an article on philosopher Richard Rorty, co-written by Dean Biron.
- Adjunct Professor Robert Flower was interviewed ABC NSW about what blood types signify.
- The Australian ran a story that referenced the QUT Creative Enterprise Australia Collider Program.
- Ebony Bennett’s Fairfax opinion piece quoted Associate Professor Adrian Barnett saying many Australian homes were “glorified tents” compared to Sweden’s well-insulated homes.
- Dr Monique Mann’s Conversation article about spyware was republished by Government News and The Mandarin.
- Facility Management published a piece in which QUT was involved in exploring how green spaces in healthcare facilities can reduce stress.
- Dr Aurelien Forget and Associate Professor Tim Dargaville wrote a Conversation article about bioprinting body organs to test new drugs. The piece was republished  in Australian News Daily Bulletin and Business Standard.
- Professor Axel BrunsConversation article showed Prime Minister’s Turnbull’s secretly-filmed Trump parody was just a drop in the Twitter ocean in June.
