QUT's Creative Industries Precinct in Brisbane will host the country's first public showcase of work by artists who are part of the Creative Commons movement in Australia on Wednesday, November 29.

The free ccSalon event will run from 6pm to 8pm and include a photo exhibition by Australian flickr photographers, printed works, a live audiovisual remix and performance by Collapsicon (http://collapsicon.net), hybrid arts music ensemble Collusion (www.collusion.com.au), and Andrew Garton of Toy Satellite (www.toysatellite.org).

The Creative Commons nonprofit movement provides a new way of managing copyright in the digital age and is part of a world-wide project being led in Australia by the Queensland University of Technology's Head of Law, Professor Brian Fitzgerald.

Professor Fitzgerald said Creative Commons licences provided a flexible range of protections and freedoms for authors, artists, and educators to allow them to legally share their work and take better advantage of the distribution, promotion, collaboration and innovation potential of the internet.

"Creative Commons builds upon the 'all rights reserved' concept of traditional copyright to offer a voluntary 'some rights reserved' approach which enables creators to share their work," he said.

"For example, a band might allow fans to download music for free but still refuse a company the right to use it as the soundtrack to an advertisement."

There are currently about 140 million web pages licensed under CC licences.

People can search for works that use CC licences via the advanced search function on engines including Google and Yahoo, as well as on the CC website, www.creativecommons.org.

The ccSalon showcase will be held at The Block at the QUT Creative Industries Precinct off Kelvin Grove Road from 6pm to 8pm on Wednesday, November 29. Entry is free.
