The latest in immersive virtual reality (VR) technology has given 15,000 prospective students and their families a unique glimpse of where QUT can take them.

QUT became the first university in Australia to offer an individual VR experience at its Gardens Point campus Open Day yesterday (SUNDAY, JULY 26).

QUT's Global Goggles is a custom-designed VR app that connects QUT with the world through a series of famous landmarks.

Visitors to Open Day, which is a chance to chat with staff and students, get course information and check out facilities, were invited to collect a free VR viewer along with instructions about downloading the app on their own smartphone.

The VR film is a combination of real filmed vision, overlaid with CGI (computer generated imagery) animation.

The real film was shot through 14 camera lenses mounted to a drone flown high above QUT's Gardens Point campus, giving a 360-degree view of Brisbane.

Visual clues and 360-degree sound introduce the viewer to landmarks that materialise across the city.

Dr Deb Polson, from QUT's Creative Industries Faculty, said Global Goggles provided prospective students and their families with a unique opportunity to interact with the latest technology.

"Virtual Reality (VR) has unlimited potential and will revolutionise the way we approach technology, learning and teaching, and countless other areas," Dr Polson said.

"QUT's philosophy is about educating our students to be global participants and the Global Goggles is a way to tell that story while showing off an immersive new experience that gives a glimpse of this game-changing technology."
